When Hawaiʻi and Stanford meet on Saturday, August 29, the matchup will mark the beginning of a new college football season, but it will also spotlight a significant moment for Polynesian representation on the sidelines.
Hawaiʻi head coach Timmy Chang enters his fifth season leading his alma mater, while Stanford head coach Tavita Pritchard begins his first season at the helm of the Cardinal. The two are among just four Polynesian head coaches currently leading FBS programs.
Their connection also goes back more than two decades. In 2004, Pritchard visited Hawaiʻi on a recruiting trip and watched Chang play quarterback for the Rainbow Warriors at Aloha Stadium. Now, 22 years later, the two will meet again, this time as opposing head coaches leading their respective programs.
The matchup carries even greater significance as Stanford hosts its Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration Game during the season opener. The Cardinal is celebrating Pacific Islander heritage throughout the Week 0 matchup, including a collaboration with Island Avenue that will see Stanford coaches and staff wear custom Pacific Islander-inspired apparel designed for the game. Stanford says the collaboration is intended to create synergy with and highlight the Pacific Islander community and those uplifting it.
But once the lights come on at Stanford Stadium, it will be Chang and Pritchard leading their teams into battle.
For Chang, it’s another season representing the program he once played for. For Pritchard, it’s the beginning of a new era at Stanford. And for both, it’s an opportunity to represent Polynesian excellence from the head coaching position on one of college football’s biggest stages.
