The NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia gave fans plenty to remember, and for Pasifika fans, there were two players worth keeping a close eye on. Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua and San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Dominick Puni took the field at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as two of the NFL’s Polynesian standouts, each playing an important role in a historic 27-7 San Francisco victory.
Their stat lines looked very different, but both made an impact in Melbourne.
Puka Nacua: 5 Receptions, 74 Yards
Nacua finished the game with five receptions for 74 yards, averaging 14.8 yards per catch. It was not the result the Rams wanted, but Nacua was still one of the team’s most productive offensive players. His biggest moment came late in the first half when Matthew Stafford found him for a 41-yard completion, moving Los Angeles deep into San Francisco territory and setting up a first-and-goal opportunity. That reception was also a reminder of what makes Nacua such a difficult matchup. He can turn a routine completion into a chunk play, and the 41-yard grab was the Rams’ biggest offensive play of the afternoon.
Nacua’s production also came in a game where the Rams’ offense struggled to find consistency. Stafford finished with 155 passing yards, and Los Angeles managed only seven points as San Francisco’s defense controlled the game for long stretches. Still, Nacua gave the Rams a reliable target and accounted for nearly half of Stafford’s passing yards. For a player entering another season as one of the NFL’s premier young receivers, Melbourne provided another reminder of how quickly Nacua can change a game with the ball in his hands.
Dominick Puni: A Key Piece of San Francisco’s Offensive Line
While Nacua’s work showed up directly on the stat sheet, Puni’s impact was happening in the trenches. The 49ers’ starting right guard helped San Francisco establish control up front as the team rushed for 174 yards and kept Brock Purdy protected throughout the game. Puni earned an 82.7 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, the highest pass-blocking grade among San Francisco’s offensive linemen in the game. That performance was particularly important because of what San Francisco was able to do offensively. Purdy completed 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns, while Christian McCaffrey and the 49ers’ rushing attack helped control the clock and wear down the Rams defense. Puni was part of the reason that operation worked.
The 49ers consistently created room for their backs, protected Purdy and eventually turned a competitive game into a 20-point victory. There were no flashy statistics attached to Puni’s name, but offensive linemen rarely get that luxury. Their impact is measured in the plays that happen because they did their job. And Puni did his job well in Melbourne.
Two Different Roles … Same Historic Stage
Nacua and Puni represented two very different sides of football. Nacua was one of Stafford’s primary weapons, producing the Rams’ biggest offensive play of the game and finishing with 74 receiving yards. Puni was part of the foundation that allowed San Francisco’s offense to dictate the game. Both were also part of a bigger moment for Polynesian football. The NFL has continued to see an increasing number of Polynesian players make their mark across the league, and having Nacua and Puni on opposite sidelines in the NFL’s first Australian regular-season game added another layer to an already historic matchup. For the fans inside the MCG, the game was about the 49ers and Rams.For Pasifika fans watching around the world, it was also another opportunity to see Polynesian athletes performing on one of the NFL’s biggest international stages. And both left Melbourne with something to build on.
