Talanoa Hufanga had himself a night. The Tongan safety came up with two interceptions, including a 66-yard pick-six, a sack and the game-sealing interception as Denver rallied past the Los Angeles Rams, 30-26, on Sunday Night Football. And when the Broncos needed him most, Hufanga was there. Trailing 19-16 in the fourth quarter, Hufanga jumped a Matthew Stafford pass and took it 66 yards to the house, giving Denver its first lead of the night at 23-19 with 4:49 remaining. The play sparked what became a wild finish at Empower Field. But he wasn’t done…
After Bo Nix’s late touchdown put Denver back ahead 30-26, the Rams drove into Broncos territory with a chance to steal the game. On the final play, Stafford’s pass into the end zone landed in Hufanga’s hands, sealing the victory and completing one of the biggest defensive performances of his season. In between those two interceptions, Hufanga also brought down Stafford for a 10-yard sack on third down, adding another momentum-changing play to an already impressive night.
For Hufanga, it was the kind of performance that reminded everyone exactly what he can bring to a defense when he’s around the football. And, of course, there was a familiar celebration. After making plays, Hufanga continues to throw up the T’s for Tonga, a celebration he has carried with him since his days with the San Francisco 49ers. The gesture represents his Tongan heritage and the people he says are behind him every step of the way. Different uniform. Same Hufanga.
From San Francisco to Denver, the T’s are still going up. And on Sunday night, they came after one of the biggest performances of his young Broncos career.
