There is something bigger than sport unfolding for Team American Samoa.
In a bold and deeply meaningful step forward, the American Samoa National Softball Team has officially begun its journey toward qualification for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games. If successful, it would mark a historic first, placing an American Samoan team on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages in a pursuit that extends far beyond medals.
At the center of this campaign is Samantha Ricketts, the head coach of Mississippi State Softball, who has been entrusted with leading the program into a new era. Ricketts is a proud daughter of American Samoa, with maternal roots tracing back to the village of Leone. Known for her leadership and competitive pedigree, Ricketts brings both experience and vision to a team driven by pride, identity, and long-term impact.

“To be entrusted with leading Team American Samoa is a tremendous honor and a responsibility I carry with deep pride and humility,” Ricketts shared.
“This opportunity is about more than LA 2028. It is about building a sustainable pathway that connects our culture, our people and our athletes across generations.”
Her words reflect the heartbeat of this movement. The mission is not only to compete, but to create opportunity. It is about building infrastructure, strengthening development pathways, and inspiring young Samoan girls to see softball as a gateway to something greater.
The road to Los Angeles begins this summer, with Team American Samoa set to test itself against international competition at two key tournaments. The first stop is the Canada Cup in Surrey, British Columbia, followed by the USA Softball International Cup in Oklahoma City. These events will serve as early benchmarks, offering a glimpse into the team’s growth, chemistry, and readiness on the global stage.
• The Canada Cup – Surrey, British Columbia (July 6-12, 2026)
• The USA Softball International Cup – Oklahoma City (July 28-August 3, 2026)
Behind the scenes, the effort is just as demanding. A newly launched fundraising campaign aims to support the essential components of this journey, from travel and training to equipment and competition costs. Backed through a partnership with the AIGA Foundation, contributions will play a direct role in helping the team take each step forward.
For George Malauulu and the American Samoa Softball Association, this is a collective mission. One rooted in community, culture, and belief.
“Our goal is the Olympics, but our purpose is the Island,” Malauulu expressed on behalf of the organization. It is a statement that captures the essence of what this journey represents. Not just a chase for qualification, but a commitment to uplift a nation, invest in its future, and carry its identity onto the world stage.
As the campaign begins, one thing is clear. Team American Samoa is not simply preparing for competition. It is building a legacy.
