Steelers’ Persistent Pursuit: Scouting UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava as a Potential 2026 Franchise Quarterback?

In the competitive realm of NFL draft scouting, the Pittsburgh Steelers have drawn attention this season. They lead the AFC North with a 3-1 record in 2025. However, their eyes are on the future at quarterback. Specifically, scouts from Pittsburgh have visited UCLA games three times. Their focus centers on Bruins quarterback Nico Iamaleava.

Iamaleava’s Journey to UCLA

Iamaleava’s path to UCLA was complex. He started at Tennessee and showed promise there. For instance, he impressed in limited play and faced Ohio State in the 2024 College Football Playoff. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound quarterback then entered the transfer portal. Reports cited NIL disputes as the reason. His camp sought deals over $4 million initially. Yet, he settled at UCLA for about $1.5 million. This move surprised many in college football.

On-Field Performance Highlights

Despite the challenges, Iamaleava has delivered strong moments at UCLA. Through nine games, he completed 165 of 259 passes. That marks a 63.7% rate, with 1,659 yards, 12 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Additionally, he rushed for 364 yards and three scores on 109 carries. His game against Nebraska stood out. He went 17-of-25 for 191 yards and two touchdowns. Plus, he added 86 rushing yards. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule praised him as a “tremendous quarterback” and “elite competitor.”

Steelers’ Scouting Patterns

The Steelers’ interest is clear and deliberate. They attended UCLA’s game against Penn State on October 4. There, Iamaleava threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 128 yards and three scores. Moreover, they returned for the Nebraska matchup on November 8. This marked their third visit this season. An earlier game added to the pattern. While they also scouted Penn State’s Drew Allar, Iamaleava’s size, arm strength, and mobility fit Pittsburgh’s needs.

Draft Implications

Pittsburgh relies on veteran Aaron Rodgers now. But they seek a successor in the deeper 2026 draft class. Analysts view Iamaleava as a top prospect. His 2024 film suggests third-round value. However, his 4.75-second 40-yard dash and playmaking could boost him higher. One scout noted his “frame and tools” suit the Steelers’ style. If this scouting leads to a pick, Iamaleava could extend Pittsburgh’s quarterback legacy. The 2026 class includes talents like LaNorris Sellers and Garrett Nussmeier. Competition will intensify. Yet, the Steelers’ early efforts show commitment. As the season ends, focus stays on UCLA and those black-and-gold scouts.
