Before Nico Iamaleava came home to Southern California, he experienced both sides of modern college football at Tennessee.

The SUCCESS was real.

In his first full season as Tennessee’s starting quarterback, Iamaleava helped lead the Volunteers to a 10-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance, throwing for 2,616 yards, 19 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

But what happened next became one of the biggest stories of the NIL and transfer-portal era.

And depending on which side you ask, the story sounds very different.
Reports surfaced that Iamaleava’s representatives were seeking to renegotiate his NIL compensation from approximately $2.4 million to somewhere around $4 million for the 2025 season.

Tennessee didn’t agree to those terms.

Nico’s camp later disputed the characterization that they were demanding $4 million and maintained that the public narrative surrounding the negotiations was inaccurate.

Then everything exploded.

On April 11, 2025—one day before Tennessee’s spring game—Iamaleava did not report for practice or team meetings.

Coaches and teammates reportedly attempted to contact him.

By the next morning, Tennessee Head Coach Josh Heupel had made his decision.

The Volunteers were moving forward without their starting quarterback.
Heupel delivered a line that immediately traveled throughout college football:

“There’s no one that’s bigger than the Power T.”

And just like that, one of college football’s most promising quarterback-program relationships was OVER.

But there was another side.
Sources close to Iamaleava told ESPN that Nico felt hurt, betrayed and unfairly portrayed as the villain as reports about his NIL demands spread publicly. They maintained that the situation was more complicated than a quarterback simply refusing to practice because he wanted more money.

Even one Tennessee source later told ESPN that Nico had worked hard, wasn’t a troublemaker and hadn’t created locker-room problems.

That’s important.

Because somewhere between Tennessee’s position and the Iamaleava family’s position lies one of the biggest lessons of this new era of college athletics:

College football is no longer JUST college football.
It’s football.
It’s education.
It’s NIL.
It’s contracts.
It’s representation.
It’s business.
It’s relationships.
And sometimes—or most of the time—it gets MESSY.

EMPOWERMENT ALSO REQUIRES ACCOUNTABILITY

I am all for young people understanding their VALUE.

I am all for student-athletes benefiting financially from the tremendous value they help create.

And I am absolutely for families advocating for their children.

Empowerment does not mean we get everything we want.

Empowerment means having the knowledge, confidence and courage to make decisions—and then accepting responsibility for what comes NEXT.

Could Tennessee have handled parts of the situation differently?

Maybe.
Could Nico and his representatives have handled parts differently?
Maybe.

That’s LIFE.
That’s LEADERSHIP.
That’s BUSINESS.
That’s SPORTS.
That’s RELATIONSHIPS.

And that’s the world today’s elite student-athletes are navigating at 18, 19 and 20 years old-and in QB Trinidad Chambliss situation at Ole Miss age 24 reported excess of 5 Million Dollars.

The irony is incredible.
Tennessee moved on from Nico.

Nico entered the portal.
UCLA’s projected starting quarterback, Joey Aguilar, subsequently left UCLA.

And where did Aguilar eventually land?

TENNESSEE.
Essentially, last year’s 2025 season two major college football programs swapped quarterbacks.

You couldn’t write a better script for the NIL and transfer-portal era.

SOMETIMES THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY IS HOME

For Nico, the next chapter brought him more than 2,000 miles from Knoxville back to Southern California.
Back near Long Beach.
Back near family.
Back near his Samoan community.
And ultimately to UCLA.
Perhaps most interestingly, reporting indicated Nico’s UCLA compensation was actually less than what he had been making at Tennessee—an important piece of context when reducing his departure to simply “he wanted more money.”

Sometimes the best opportunity isn’t the one paying the most.
Sometimes SUCCESS is about FIT.
FAMILY.
PEACE.
PURPOSE.
OPPORTUNITY.
And being somewhere you believe you can become the best version of yourself.

Now comes the part that Nico ultimately controls.

PERFORMANCE.
Because narratives can be debated.
NIL numbers can be disputed.
People can argue about Tennessee.
People can argue about UCLA.
But eventually the ball gets snapped.
And football has a wonderful way of simplifying everything.
READ THE DEFENSE.
DELIVER THE FOOTBALL.
MOVE THE CHAINS.
SCORE TOUCHDOWNS.
LEAD YOUR PEOPLE.
WIN.

That’s What’s Important Now.
And after helping UCLA open its 2026 season with a 45-24 road victory over Cal, Nico Iamaleava has an opportunity to write the next part of his story himself.
Not on social media.
Not through NIL negotiations.
Not through the transfer portal.
But between the white lines.

One of my favorite acronyms is WAS, most think of it as wait and see. I believe it stands for work and see.

This is a storyline that I will be following closely both at Tennessee and at UCLA. Were UCLA definitely has their QB1 and Tennessee now has another Freshman Phenom Faizon Brandon.
