The Polynesian Pipeline Shines: BYU Pro Day 2026 Recap

The atmosphere inside BYU’s Indoor Practice Facility on Friday morning was electric as 17 former Cougars took to the turf for the 2026 Pro Day. For the first time in two years, the event returned to Provo after a hiatus during which the Big 12 hosted a collective conference function. While the headlines often focus on the flashy 40-yard dash times—like Mory Bamba’s blistering 4.27 seconds—the real heart of the program was on full display through the incredible performances of the Polynesian players and the leadership of head coach Kalani Sitake.

Strength and Versatility: The Polynesian Standouts

One of the most jaw-dropping performances of the day came from defensive tackle Kaufusi Pakofe. In a display of raw, brute strength, Pakofe led all participants with 39 reps on the bench press. This wasn’t just the best of the day; it marked the most reps ever recorded in BYU’s NFL Pro Day history and would have ranked first overall at the NFL Combine. Pakofe also demonstrated mobility for his size, recording a 5.58-second 40-yard dash and a 22.5-inch vertical.

Running back Hinckley Ropati proved he is a force to be reckoned with as he transitions to the professional level. Ropati put up 28 reps on the bench press, which would have topped every single running back at this year’s NFL Combine. Beyond his strength, his versatility was a major talking point. Running backs coach Harvey Unga described him as a “student of the game” and “one of the most versatile backs” he has coached, noting his ability to run routes, catch, and block. Ropati also posted a solid 4.57-second 40-yard dash and a 35-inch vertical.

The offensive line was anchored by the duo of Austin Leausa and Weylin Lapuaho. Leausa showcased his athleticism with a 5.03-second 40-yard dash and 21 reps on the bench press. Offensive line coach TJ Woods praised Leausa’s intelligence and rare versatility, stating he can play all five positions on the line. His counterpart, Lapuaho, was described by Woods as a “Certified Dawg” who plays the game with the necessary physical edge. Lapuaho also clocked a 5.03-second 40-yard dash and proved to be a dominant force in both pass protection and the run game.

The Sitake Culture: “Once a Cougar, Always a Cougar”

At the center of it all was head coach Kalani Sitake, who has built a “culture of love” that was palpable throughout the facility. Sitake’s philosophy was best exemplified by the return of quarterback Jake Retzlaff. Although Retzlaff finished his playing career at Tulane, he returned to Provo to throw passes for his former teammates. Sitake welcomed him back with open arms, stating, “Once a Cougar, always a Cougar” and emphasizing that Retzlaff remains part of the BYU family.

Sitake noted that Pro Day is about more than just the draft; it’s about the future of the program. He pointed out that the current team, including freshmen, were in attendance to “visualize themselves doing this next year”. To conclude the day, Sitake hosted a dinner for the departing players, gifting them their helmets and jerseys as a final send-off.

Building on the Legacy of Puka Nacua

As scouts from 31 NFL teams watched these athletes, they were undoubtedly looking for the next breakout star in the mold of former Cougar Puka Nacua. The success of players like Nacua has paved the way for current draft hopefuls like Chase Roberts, who significantly improved his 40-yard dash time to 4.51 seconds, and Jack Kelly, whose versatility at linebacker has scouts buzzing.

With the strength of Pakofe, the versatility of Ropati and Leausa, and the “Certified Dawg” mentality of Lapuaho, the Polynesian pipeline at BYU continues to produce NFL-caliber talent. Under Sitake’s guidance, these players are leaving Provo not just as great athletes, but as representatives of the unique culture they helped build. All eyes now turn to Pittsburgh for the NFL Draft on April 23-25.
