Apia, Samoa | The Government of Samoa has announced its decision to withdraw its recognition and support of Lakapi Samoa, following months of consultations regarding ongoing issues within the administration of Samoan rugby.
In an official statement released by the Government Press Secretariat, the Government said it had provided time and space for Lakapi Samoa to find an amicable resolution to internal matters, but has now decided to withdraw all financial support and assistance previously provided to the national rugby union.
Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Polataivao Fosi Schmidt said the decision comes after concerns surrounding internal issues and divisions affecting the administration of the union, issues raised by former players and coaches, and the declining status of Samoan rugby on the international stage.
“The Government has given ample time for the Union to resolve the internal issues and division impacting on the administration of the union,” the statement said.
The Government emphasized that the decision does not signal a withdrawal of support for rugby in Samoa. Instead, it stated that it remains committed to the continued development of the sport and will determine which union it will support moving forward to help deliver future rugby development, restore professional standards, and strengthen Samoa’s position in global rugby.
The Prime Minister said the decision is intended to help “reset Samoan rugby” and highlighted that major development pathways and financial assistance already in the pipeline will continue to support the future growth of rugby in Samoa.
The Government’s announcement marks a significant moment for Samoan rugby as discussions continue around the future structure, leadership, and development of the sport.
