At America’s stadium in Pasadena, UCLA opened Big Ten play with a late night
offensive explosion, defeating Purdue 52-38 at the Rose Bowl and improving to 3-0 on
the season.
Leading the way for the Bruins was Samoan quarterback, Nico Iamaleava, who
delivered his strongest passing performance of the season thus far. The Long Beach
native completed 19 of 31 passes for a UCLA career-high 276 yards, throwing three
touchdowns without an interception making those his first three passing touchdowns of
the season.
Iamaleava made an impact early, connecting with Semaj Morgan for two first-quarter
touchdowns as UCLA jumped out to a fast start. Iamaleava also showed his ability as a
dual-threat quarterback, including a 32-yard run in the first half. Behind a determined
Iamaleava and a dominant UCLA rushing attack, the Bruins finished with 645 total
yards– their most since 2019.
On the other sideline, Purdue featured Pasifika talent of its own in offensive lineman
Nuku Mafi and linebacker Charles Correa.
Mafi, a 6-foot-4, 325-pound sophomore from Rose Park, Utah, started at left tackle for
the Boilermakers. The Oklahoma State transfer entered Purdue with significant
experience after starting all 12 games for the Cowboys in 2025. Against UCLA, Mafi
was part of a Purdue offense that continued to move the ball despite the conference
loss. Quarterback Ryan Browne threw for a career-high 378 yards and three
touchdowns as Purdue kept the game competitive deep into the second half.
Defensively, Correa continued his role as one of the leaders of Purdue’s defense. The
6-foot-3 linebacker from Kuli’ou’ou, Hawai’i, was named a team captain ahead of the
season after earning All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2025. Correa entered Saturday’s
matchup coming off a 12-tackle performance against Wake Forest.
The 52-38 matchup showcased plenty of offense, but it also put Pasifika talent on
display on both sides of the field. From Iamaleava commanding UCLA’s offense to Mafi
battling in the trenches and Correa leading Purdue’s defense, Saturday night’s Big Ten
matchup gave Pasifika football fans several familiar names to follow throughout the
college football season.
