Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Kingsley Suamataia was unexpectedly held out of Sunday’s 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, and head coach Andy Reid is keeping the reason behind the decision private. Suamataia, who had started at left guard throughout the 2026 season, did not play against the Raiders despite not appearing on Kansas City’s injury report. Veteran Mike Caliendo started in his place. The Chiefs initially classified the lineup change as a “coaching decision.”
After the game, Reid addressed the situation before taking questions about Suamataia.
“As far as the Kingsley thing goes, before you guys ask, that’s between Kingsley and I,” Reid said. “But we’ll figure it out, and down the road we’ll be better as a team for it, and Kingsley will be better for it.”
When pressed on whether the decision was related to performance or discipline, Reid reiterated that the matter would remain between him and Suamataia. The Associated Press reported that Reid said Suamataia did not start for disciplinary reasons, but the Chiefs have not publicly disclosed what led to the disciplinary decision. That distinction is important. While speculation has circulated among fans and NFL media about what may have happened, neither Reid nor the Chiefs have publicly identified the specific issue involving Suamataia.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was also asked about the situation following the win.
“Kingsley knows how important he is to the team,” Mahomes said, adding that he would keep the matter between Reid and Suamataia. Mahomes also expressed confidence in Caliendo and said, “We’ll get Kingsley back in the fold here soon.”
Suamataia had started all of Kansas City’s games at left guard entering Sunday and had played all 201 offensive snaps at the position before the Raiders matchup. For now, the details surrounding Suamataia’s benching remain private. Reid has made it clear: whatever happened between him and the 23-year-old offensive lineman will stay between them.
