Utah has taken complete control of the Battle of the Brothers, carrying a dominant 26–0 lead over Utah State into halftime at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Quarterback Devon Dampier has been the driving force behind Utah’s offense. Dampier completed 17 of 26 passes for 218 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions during the first half. He also added 30 yards on the ground, consistently extending plays and keeping Utah State’s defense under pressure.
His strongest connection has been with wide receiver Braden Pegan, who enters halftime with seven receptions for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
Utah established its authority on the opening possession. Facing third-and-14 from the Utah State 28-yard line, Dampier delivered a strike to Pegan for the game’s first touchdown. The 28-yard connection completed a 75-yard drive and gave the Utes an early 7–0 advantage.
The Utes followed with another 75-yard touchdown drive. Dampier moved the offense through the air and on the ground before Byrd Ficklin powered into the end zone on a nine-yard run. Although the two-point attempt failed, Utah had quickly established a 13–0 lead.
Kicker Dillon Curtis added two field goals during the second quarter, including an impressive 54-yard conversion. Curtis finished the half perfect on both field goals and extra points, accounting for eight of Utah’s 26 points.
The most important sequence came during the final minute of the half.
Utah State linebacker James Jennette sacked Dampier and forced Utah to punt. It appeared the Aggies had finally stopped Utah and would have an opportunity to close the half with the football.
Instead, returner John Shepard fumbled the punt, and Utah’s Nate Tilmon recovered it in Aggies territory.
Utah immediately punished the mistake. On third-and-eight from the Utah State 37-yard line, Dampier found Pegan for their second touchdown connection of the afternoon. Curtis converted the extra point, giving Utah a commanding 26–0 halftime advantage.
That late touchdown captured the entire first half: Utah created opportunities, Utah State made mistakes and the Utes capitalized.
Utah’s defense has been just as impressive as its offense. Aggies quarterback Garrett Brosterhous completed 10 of 13 passes, but those completions produced only 74 yards. Utah State managed just 11 rushing yards and was forced to punt four times.
Linebacker T. Reynolds led Utah with six tackles, while C. Polu recorded a sack. The Utes prevented Utah State from producing explosive plays or establishing any rhythm on the ground.
Jennette has been one of Utah State’s defensive standouts, contributing four tackles and the Aggies’ only sack. Safety Chapman Lewis recorded six tackles, while punter L. Rehkow averaged 44.3 yards across four punts.
At halftime, Utah has dominated every meaningful category. Dampier is controlling the offense, Pegan is winning downfield, Curtis is delivering on special teams and the Utah defense has kept the Aggies off the scoreboard.
